Prof. Edward Kwame Asante assumed duty as the 4th President of Garden City University College, Kenyase-Kumasi on Wednesday, 1st August, 2018 to serve an initial four-year term subject to renewal, based on satisfactory performance.

As President, he is the Chief Executive Officer. That is, the chief academic, administrative and disciplinary officer of the of the University College as stipulated in Statute 27. The President reports directly to the Governing Council of the University College; and is responsible for organising and conducting the academic, financial and administrative business of the University College.

Career

He previously served as the Director, Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). IEDE comprised the Centre for Distance Education (CDE), with 38 Study Centres, the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) and the Centre for Teacher Development and Action Research (CETDAR); and had a student population of 18,434, teaching staff of 1,420 (fulltime & part-time) and support staff of 56 across the ten regions of Ghana.

Prof. Kwame Asante has twenty (20) years (1998-2018) of university teaching, research, leadership and administrative experience. He joined UEW as a teaching assistant in the Department of English Education, and subsequently became the head of CETDAR for seven years, head of Early Childhood Education for two years, Vice Dean, Faculty of Educational Studies for two years and Director, Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE) for seven years. He has also served as the Institutional Representative of the Open University of UK’s Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa (TESSA), as well as the Director of the African Virtual University (AVU) Centre in UEW.

Education

Prof. Kwame Asante is an Associate Professor of International Education and Development. He holds a Certificate in Management of Higher Education Institutions from the Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI), Nahal, Israel (2013, an International Professional Doctorate in Education (Ed.D) in International Education and Development from the University of Sussex, Brighton, UK (2011). He also holds a Certificate in Developing and Managing Distance Education from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada (2000),  a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in English Language and Literature from the University of Birmingham, UK, (1998), and a First Class Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in English Language and Mathematics awarded by the University of Cape Coast (1994).

Publications

He has twenty peer reviewed publications, including five books; and over thirty invited paper presentations at international, national and local conferences, seminars and workshops. He is a member of a number of international and national professional associations, including Ghana English Studies Association, British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) and the Poetics and Linguistics Association of UK (PALA).

Professor Kwame Asante is married with 3 children.

Research, Consultancies and Grants

Prof. Kwame Asante has researched and consulted for a number of multilateral and bilateral funding organisations across Africa and the world as a team leader, co-researcher or member. The World Bank (Global Partnership for Education (GPE), DfID, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Teacher Education Division (TED) of the Ministry of Education (MOE, Ghana are some of the organisations he has either researched, consulted for or secured grants from for various initiatives and interventions.

Service on university Boards and Committees

Prof. Kwame Asante has served on a number of university Boards and Committees, including the Academic Board, Executive Committee, Finance and Development Planning Committee, Research, Conferences and Scholarship Committee, Academic Planning Committee and Student –Staff Consultative Committee.

Strengths

He has the ability in raising funds through proposal writing; excellent inter-personal skills and relations, maturity and team building spirit. He is imbued with a passion for academic excellence, accountability, innovation, to think outside the box and do things differently in order to achieve better outcomes.

Personal and Family Life

Prof. Kwame Asante comes from Obo-Kwahu. He is a Christian of the Presbyterian tradition. He is married to Mrs. Olivia Asante, who was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Early Childhood Education, UEW. They have three children and a number of adopted children.

His hobbies are reading, listening to music, driving, photography and adventure travelling.
