U.E.W- GIVE US THE 'CERTIFICATE', POSTPONE THE 'CEREMONY'❗

Counsellor Daniel Fenyi

'Ceremony' and 'Certificate' are not the same. The 'Ceremony' is OPTIONAL but the 'Certificate' is OBLIGATORY. Just as other levels of education like the JHS and SHS, one can be awarded the certificate without any graduation ceremony. University of Education, Winneba (UEW) can indefinitely postpone the graduation ceremony as it has already done, but SHOULD NOT postpone the awarding of the certificates, if she really cares about the welfare of the students.

The innocent prospective graduates need the certificates for various reasons. Hence, denying them of their hard-earned certificates portends a big blow to them, professionally and academically. It's to be noted that all other Universities in Ghana (UG, UCC, KNUST, etc) are awarding their degrees around these times which gives their graduates competitive advantage over their UEW counterparts in the job market.

Besides, many others also need the certificates to upgrade themselves at their various workplaces. Most professions upgrade their workers to their appropriate ranks in August. If UEW graduates are not given their certificates, it means they would have to wait till next year to be upgraded. That is Money made to Waste! Time is Money.

Again, some of the students would love to further their education, secure jobs, etc abroad and locally and the certificate is of utmost relevance in these endeavours. A delay in the release of the certificates would impel them to wait. Thus, they would have to miss the opportunity to further their education, secure jobs, etc locally and abroad in due time.

U.E.W, I suggest that you award your prospective graduates their certificates now and then recall them back to campus for the graduation ceremony. After all, attending the 'ceremony' is optional. For now, it looks as though you are merely victimising your students than a mere postponement of the ceremony.

Note: The writer, Counsellor Daniel Fenyi, albeit an alumnus of U.E.W, has no in/direct stake in this particular graduation ceremony nor the certificate. He empathises with the over 30,000 graduates who are 'victims' of the postponement.

Thank you!
