*Finding Your True Self: From Medicine to Journalism- The Komla Dumor Story*
Author: Counselor FENYI

We mark exactly 4-years (21-23 February, 2014) that our brother, Komla Dumor formerly of *BBC* , went 6-feet down the grave. Interestingly, like *Bernard Avle* of *Citi FM,* *Kojo Oppong Nkrumah* formerly of *Joy FM,* *Kwame Sefa Kayi* of *Peace FM,* *Komla* became a successful journalist without any background in journalism. *He was the only West African news reader on the BBC World news until his death.* His life serves as an inspiration to many young people and HE's indeed "the sun that will never set".

*It takes four years to get a university degree, but it took Komla Dumor almost ten years to get a university degree.* It is not Komla's success that inspires more, it is his  transition from _failure_ to _success_ that is intriguing. Definitely, if one uses *swimming* as a measure of success, the *fish* will appear more useful than the elephant. *It is your measure of success that determines how useful and impactful you are to this world.*  What is your measure of success?

Note, *greatness does not guarantee a failure-free journey.* The fact that you've failed doesn't mean you can't be great. You possibly might be on the *wrong track.* In this life, no matter how smart or intelligent you are, if you are on the *wrong track,* you'll die *unnoticed* and *uncelebrated.* After reading, if you need a *professional mentor/counselor* to help you get on your *right track,* Pick *Counselor FENYI's* number and call or whatsapp him on *+233242937O17.*

Komla Dumor swiftly moved from a *wrong track* in *Medicine* to a *right track* in *Journalism* and that made him great. He studied _Medicine_ at the _University of Jos, Nigeria_  but unfornately failed in his 4th year. So he was sacked from the medical school. He,himself, said on Springboard Roadshow that, _“I discovered I did not have the discipline for the long hours of work that was required to study medicine. I was young. I was distracted. I failed, and I had to pay the price.”_

Komla then relocated to Ghana where he pursued *BSc Sociology and Psychology* at Ghana's premier university, the *University of Ghana, Legon.* Thus, Dumor pursued a *degree* for *eight (8) years.* He further pursued a *Master of Arts Degree in Public Administration* from the prestigious *Harvard University, USA.*

At Legon, the lecturers went on strike for about a year and that's when he decided to start doing something before lecturers resume duty. He then started reporting for radio stations. In 2000, he joined *Joy FM* where he served as the *host* of the *Super Morning Show.* In 2003, he was awarded Ghana Journalist of the Year. In 2006, he joined the BBC and that's where he worked till he sudden demise on 18th January, 2014.

In December 2013, he was named as one of the 100 most influential Africans of 2013 by New African Magazine and he died a month later.
