In the beginning (6th March 1957), there were 5 regions, which her Majesty the Queen called: Eastern, Western; Trans-Volta Togoland (which Parliament renamed Volta after independence), Ashanti and Northern.

Then on 4th April 1959, the Osagyefo promptly carved out Brong Ahafo Region from the western/northern Ashanti and the Prang/Yeji areas of Northern (B/A Region ACT 1959).

Then on 1st July 1960, Northern Region was hereby divided into 2 to be known as Upper and Northern regions (The Regions of Ghana ACT 1960).

Then in July 1970, Western region was divided into 2 to be known as Central and Western regions.

Then on 23rd July 1982, the PNDC created the Greater Accra region from Eastern region (PNDCL 26).

Then in 1983, the PNDC hereby divided Upper region into 2, to be called Upper East and Upper West regions (PNDCL 41).
