PROMOTIONS IN G.E.S

Introduction

I have been observing with keen interest, how promotions are carried out in the Ghana Education Service, and I often tend to ask myself, can’t there be a better way promotions are done in the Service?
Can’t there be a mechanism that can automatically promote someone who is due for qualification to the next level?
Ghana Education Service has stipulated in their terms of conditions that there are two basic modes of promotions in the Service, namely: by further education and by years in service. My main focus is basically dwell on the teachers years in service but I will also talk about further education.

But first, let’s take a look at the various ranks in the Ghana Education Service.

Director General
Director
Assistant Director I
Assistant Director II
Principal Superintendent
Senior Superintendent I
Senior Superintendent II
Superintendent II
Superintendent I
Teacher

(The ranks above are not in relation to the new ”yet to be implemented” GES 2012 Policy Framework for Pre-Tertiary Teachers)

Further Education

This is by far the easiest way to propel ones self to the level of a Principal Superintendent in the teaching Service. From that level onwards, years in service comes into play.
The fresh college graduate with a diploma is automatically put on scale of a Senior Superintendent II once he [she] is confirmed after a year of passing out. If he [she] furthers his/her education for a Bachelors Degree, he will only have to submit the certificates to be processed and put on scale as a Principal Superintendent. From there, the educational leverage in promotions stops! The rest now has to do with the second mode of promotion : years in service.
