*A Strike Action Declared During Holidays Is Useless Mr. NAGRAT President*

Mr. Daniel Fenyi
Convener, New Generation Teachers (NeGeT)

Leadership of the various teacher unions always treat teachers as though they don't have brains in their head. They appear to be fighting for teachers but always stab them in the back. We want to make NAGRAT leadership aware that we, the members, are matured enough to detect a prank and pretentious activity when we see one.

Strike is one of the various means through which groups and individuals "refuse" to work in order to register their displeasure against a policy that goes against their interest. Strike is meant to put pressure on policy makers to listen to the grievances of the affected party. What therefore is the relevance of a strike action that can't put pressure on any policy maker?

When doctors go on strike, many lives are affected including deaths of people and so authorities are compelled to react. When drivers go on strike, passengers are not able to travel. But when teachers go on a strike action during holidays, what is affected? Nothing.

I, as a passionate tutor, by this piece, call on all NAGRAT members to be smarter and completely ignore the strike declaration and pressurize the president, Angel Carbonu, to quickly withdraw the statement and declare a new one on 16th April, 2018 when all Senior High Schools in the country would have resumed.

NAGRAT members, be minded that schools will re-open on 16th April and by GES' code of conduct  a teacher can't absent himself from work for 10 working days continuous. Going by this, it means all NAGRAT members must be in school on the re-opening day since the 10 day directive would have elapsed by then bearing in mind the fact that vacation is for the students and not for teachers.

It seems no one is ready to really fight for the Ghanaian teacher. The Condition of Service of the Ghanaian teacher is woefully inadequate but sake of love for job and country, we still teach. Teacher Unions have played on the intelligence of teachers for too long and we are tired of them. Fight or Fold, posterity will judge us all.
