*History: African Union (AU) Holiday- Educationist*

On 25th May, 1963 (it was a Saturday) the African Union (formerly OAU) was formed. The AU was formed by two groups: the "Casablanca Group", led by Ghana's Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the "Monrovia Group" led by Senegal's Leopold Senghor.

The first meeting of AU was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the meeting was chaired by Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie I. The meeting was attended by 32 Independent African States.

On 9th June, 2002 South Africa's former president, Thabo Mbeki who was the then chairman of OAU changed the name from Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to African Union (AU).

The Headquarters of AU is Addis Ababa-Ethiopia, where it's first meeting was held. The current head is Paul Kagame , President of Rwanda

Out of the 54 countries in Africa, 53 are members of the AU except Morroco who withdrew from the AU on 12th November, 1984 (it was a Monday). Morroco now wants to join the AU again.

The AU had two fundamental aims; first, it was to help countries who had not gained independence at the time to get their independence. Second, the AU was to protect independent states from being recolonised by the Whites again.

The AU is 55years old today.
